Measurement Guidelines

General Guidelines Before Measuring

Use a soft measuring tape for all body measurements. Stand straight in a natural posture and keep the body relaxed. Do not stretch the tape too much and do not keep it loose. The tape should sit close to the body but should not press into the skin.

Wear light fitted clothes while measuring. Avoid thick jackets, loose clothes, or bulky fabric because they can change the actual measurement. For better accuracy, take every measurement twice and note the final inches clearly.

DO
  • Keep the tape straight, smooth, and comfortable.
  • Stand naturally and breathe normally.
  • Take measurement in inches and write it immediately.
  • Use a mirror or another person’s help for back measurements.

Chest Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of the chest. First, raise the arms slightly and pass the measuring tape under the arms around the chest. After placing the tape properly, bring the arms down naturally and then check the inches.

The tape should stay around the fullest chest area and should not be too tight. Keep the body relaxed while taking the measurement.
DO
  • Raise the arms slightly to place the tape properly.
  • Bring the arms down before noting the final inches.
  • Keep the tape around the fullest part of the chest.
  • Keep the tape snug, straight, and comfortable.

  • Do not keep the arms raised while noting the measurement.

Bicep Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of the upper arm. First, raise the arm slightly and place the tape around the bicep area. Check the fitted inches first, then loosen it slightly according to comfort.

The tape should cover the fullest part of the upper arm properly.
DO
  • Raise the arm slightly to place the tape.
  • Measure around the fullest part of the upper arm.
  • Check the fitted inches first.
  • Keep slight comfort space after checking the fit.

  • Do not measure too close to the shoulder or elbow.

Sleeve Length Measurement

Start from the shoulder point and measure down along the arm till the wrist. Use the same shoulder point from where the shoulder measurement was taken. The tape should go naturally from the shoulder side towards the wrist.

Keep the arm relaxed while taking the measurement.

  • Start from the correct shoulder point.
  • Measure down along the arm till the wrist.
  • Keep the tape straight and smooth.
  • Keep the arm relaxed.

  • Do not start from the neck.
  • Do not stop before the wrist.

Coat Length Measurement

Place the measuring tape at the top of the shoulder, beside the neck. Run the tape vertically down the front body and measure till where you want the coat to end. Standard coat length is usually till thumb level.

The tape should fall straight down from the shoulder.
DO
  • Place the tape at the top of the shoulder beside the neck.
  • Measure vertically down the front body.
  • Measure till the required coat ending point.
  • Use thumb level as the standard coat length.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure from the middle of the neck.
  • Do not move the tape sideways.
  • Do not bend the body while measuring.
  • Do not guess the length without checking the end point.

Shoulder Measurement

First, identify the shoulder bone properly. Place the tape on one shoulder bone and measure straight across to the other shoulder bone.

This measurement should be taken from shoulder bone to shoulder bone only.
DO
  • Identify both shoulder bones first.
  • Place the tape on one shoulder bone.
  • Measure straight across to the other shoulder bone.
  • Keep the tape flat and straight.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure from the neck.
  • Do not measure too low on the arm.
  • Do not curve the tape.
  • Do not stretch the shoulders while measuring.

Wrist Measurement

Measure around the wrist bone. First, place the tape around the wrist and keep it fitted. After checking the fitted inches, loosen it by 2.5 inches.

This gives comfort around the wrist opening.
DO
  • Place the tape around the wrist bone.
  • Check the fitted inches first.
  • Loosen it by 2.5 inches.
  • Keep the tape straight around the wrist.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure above the wrist bone.
  • Do not keep the tape twisted.
  • Do not note the fitted measurement without adding looseness.
  • Do not press the tape too hard into the skin.

Neck Measurement

Wrap the measuring tape around the neck where the collar sits. Keep the tape slightly loose and comfortable.

The tape should not feel tight around the neck.
DO
  • Place the tape around the neck.
  • Keep it slightly loose.
  • Make sure it feels comfortable.
  • Keep the neck straight while measuring.
× DON'T
  • Do not pull the tape tight.
  • Do not measure too high near the jawline.
  • Do not bend the neck down.
  • Do not press the tape into the neck.

Half Chest Measurement

Half chest measurement is taken from one underarm point to the other underarm point. Place the tape on one side and measure straight across to the other side.

This is taken across the chest from one armhole/underarm seam to the other.
DO
  • Place the tape at one underarm point.
  • Take it straight to the other underarm point.
  • Keep the tape flat and straight.
  • Note the inches clearly.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure diagonally.
  • Do not curve the tape.
  • Do not pull the tape too tight.
  • Do not place the tape above or below the underarm point.

Cross Back Measurement

Cross back measurement is taken across the back from one armhole to the other. Place the tape on one side of the back armhole and take it across the back to the other side. The tape should pass over the shoulder blade area.

Keep the shoulders relaxed while taking this measurement.
DO
  • Place the tape at one back armhole point.
  • Measure across the back to the other armhole point.
  • Keep the tape over the shoulder blade area.
  • Keep the tape straight.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure near the neck.
  • Do not bend the back.
  • Do not stretch the shoulders.
  • Do not take the tape diagonally.

Upper Abdomen / Curve Measurement

Place the measuring tape just below the chest. Wrap it around the upper abdomen area, from the lower chest side around the body.

The tape should stay straight and comfortable.
DO
  • Place the tape just below the chest.
  • Wrap it around the upper abdomen area.
  • Keep the tape straight all around.
  • Note the inches clearly.
× DON'T
  • Do not place the tape on the stomach/navel area.
  • Do not pull the tape too tight.
  • Do not keep the tape loose.
  • Do not measure over bulky clothes.

Stomach / Belly Measurement

Place the tape over the navel area and wrap it around the full stomach. The tape should go around the most prominent belly point.

Keep the body relaxed while taking this measurement.
DO
  • Place the tape around the navel area.
  • Wrap it around the fullest belly point.
  • Keep the tape straight and comfortable.
  • Stand naturally while measuring.

  • Do not pull the stomach in.
  • Do not press the tape into the belly.
  • Do not keep the tape loose or hanging.
  • Do not bend while measuring.

Hip / Seat Measurement

Place the tape around the hip area and wrap it fully around the hips. Measure around the widest/fullest part of the hip or seat area.

The tape should not be pulled tight.
DO
  • Place the tape around the fullest hip area.
  • Wrap it completely around the hips.
  • Keep the tape straight and level.
  • Keep it comfortable.
× DON'T
  • Do not pull the tape tight.
  • Do not measure too high on the waist.
  • Do not measure too low on the thighs.
  • Do not keep the tape tilted.

Trouser Length Measurement

Take off shoes or slippers before measuring. Place the tape on the waist and measure straight down to the ankle.

The tape should go vertically from waist to ankle.
DO
  • Remove shoes or slippers before measuring.
  • Place the tape on the waist.
  • Measure straight down to the ankle.
  • Keep the tape vertical.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure with shoes or slippers on.
  • Do not bend the knee while measuring.
  • Do not take the tape forward or backward.
  • Do not guess the ankle point.

Thigh Measurement

Stand straight with legs slightly apart. Place the tape around the thickest part of the thigh or just below the hips. Wrap the tape properly around the thigh and check the fitted inches first. Then loosen it by 2.5 inches.

This gives proper comfort for thigh movement.

  • Stand straight with legs slightly apart.

Knee Measurement

Place the tape around the knee point. Wrap it comfortably around the knee and check the inches at the fitted point. Then loosen it by 2.5 inches.

This helps keep the knee area comfortable.
DO
  • Place the tape around the knee point.
  • Keep the tape straight and even.
  • Check the fitted inches first.
  • Loosen it by 2.5 inches.

  • Do not measure above or below the knee point.
  • Do not keep the tape twisted.
  • Do not pull it too tight.
  • Do not skip the looseness.

Bottom / Ankle Measurement

Place the tape around the ankle where the pant bottom ends. Wrap it around the ankle to measure the leg opening circumference.

This measurement decides the bottom opening of the pant.
DO
  • Place the tape around the ankle.
  • Measure where the pant bottom should end.
  • Keep the tape straight and comfortable.
  • Note the final inches clearly.
× DON'T
  • Do not measure too high above the ankle.
  • Do not pull the tape too tight.
  • Do not keep the tape loose.
  • Do not change the ankle point while measuring.

Round / Crotch Length Measurement

Place the tape at the front waist near the navel. Take the tape down between the legs and bring it up to the back waist at the same waist level.

The tape should follow the body naturally and should not be pulled too tight.
DO
  • Start from the front waist near the navel.
  • Take the tape down between the legs.
  • Bring it up to the back waist.
  • Stop at the same waist level.
× DON'T
  • Do not pull the tape too tight between the legs.
  • Do not keep the back waist point higher or lower.
  • Do not bend the body while measuring.
  • Do not leave the tape loose while taking the measurement.
